According to Peggy Post, author of Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette, "It’s not rude to request money as a wedding gift. However, it’s extremely important to ask politely." Wedding etiquette further contends that you DO NOT include information about your registry in the wedding invitation. On the other hand, the host(s) of your bridal shower may include this information in the shower invitation. DownPaymentDreams.com even allows you to print shower invitation insert cards (pdf). Guests will also expect to find your registry information on your web page, so make sure you send an announcement with a link to your personal wedding web page.

Great! You should have options for those guests who really enjoy choosing a gift from a more traditional registry. Also, shower guests may not give cash even though you spread the word about your down payment registry in the shower invitation. If they choose to give cash it will more likely be a wedding gift as opposed to a shower gift. Therefore it is wise to have at least one other registry, which you can list on your DownPaymentDreams.com personal wedding web page.

Use the announcement function in your control panel to let your guests know that information about you and your wedding is available online at DownPaymentDreams.com. Although you should not send an announcement stating that you have registered for gifts, guests will expect to find this information on your personal wedding web page. The host(s) of your bridal shower may want to print out a
shower invitation insert card to include in the shower invitations (but remember - you never want to include registry information in the wedding invitation). Word of mouth is also a great way to let people know where you are registered. You can rely on your friends and family to spread the word if they are asked where you are registered. Always remember to be gracious. If someone asks you directly what you would like as a gift, Peggy Post suggests a response such as "Whatever you choose will be wonderful, I’m sure, but money for a house down payment is on the top of our wish list."

We’re glad to see you are thinking ahead! It is extremely important to speak to a mortgage loan counselor in order to determine what you can afford. This should happen even before you start looking at houses. It is also important to note that not all loan programs will accept gift money as a down payment. This makes it even more crucial to discuss your options with a knowledgeable and professional mortgage consultant. A great place to start is at your bank! You may also want to contact a local mortgage company. Please keep in mind that your gift funds must be properly documented in order to be used for your down payment. Your loan consultant can provide detailed instructions for keeping proper records of the cash gifts you receive.
